THE CONDITION FOR FORGIVENESS

Jesus The Mystery Man – Episode 8

forgiveness

In our previous post on “Jesus The Mystery Man,” we discussed how Jesus taught his disciples how to pray. While the lesson shouldn’t be applied as a vain repetition, every Christian supposed to consider it as a guide and source of motivation for forming their how own prayer pattern.

Readers also learned in the previous episode that one of the requirements of getting God to answer our prayers is by forgiving other people. Yes, this important statement has become the topic of discussion in this episode – Forgiveness!

Join us as we examine “Forgiveness” in the eighth chapter of the book Who Was Jesus, Really? – Book One.

Do you think you’re perfect? I won’t imagine that. Are you looking for a perfect person, you’re likely not going to find one either! No one is hundred percent righteous. We’ve wronged God, and we have wronged each other.

If you dare to check, you will find out you have wronged God more than once or times in the past. In the same train of thought, you have likely wronged your fellow human being; someone else must have wronged you too. So, forgiveness plays a vital role in solving the problem.

How can we handle the subject of forgiveness? To properly handle this, let’s consider the question that Peter asked his Master Jesus.

Peter, the most outspoken disciple, asked Jesus:  “Lord, how often shall my brother sin against me, and I forgive him? Up to seven times?” (Matthew 18:21).

Jesus shocked Peter (and other disciples) with his response, “I do not say to you, up to seven times, but up to seventy times seven” (Matthew 18:22).

Of course, we know it is not possible for someone to offend a friend (or an enemy) for 490 times – That’s just a long time for any individual to repeat the same offense to his neighbor!

Jesus was telling his disciples, including you and me, to forgive those who have offended us no matter how frequent it is or how painful it is.

Why would someone forgive others?

Jesus Christ gave an answer to that. He taught us in the Lord’s Prayer,

“(God please) Forgive us our debts (offenses) as we forgive others of their debts (offenses).

Again, Jesus taught his disciples, “If you want God, whom you sin against often, to forgive your sins, then think about it – You must forgive your brother or sister who has offended you.

Jesus made the topic of forgiveness so easy for us to understand. He clarified that prayer alone is not enough to earn anyone forgiveness, you must also forgive others if you want God to forgive your offenses to him.

The book Who Was Jesus, Really – Book One? is indeed an invaluable book with many treasures of truth to understand about Jesus Christ. While chapter eight of book one that we discussed here is the last part, the next episode will unveil the beginning of series two – Who Was Jesus, Really – Book Two.
