A Bible story series run about the life of Jesus Christ adapted from the book Who Was Jesus, Really? By James Taiwo.
In our previous post, we discussed the miraculous birth of Jesus – a mystery baby whose birth was prophesied years before he came, and of how he was born of the virgin mother Mary but brought up by his foster father, Joseph. But we are yet to learn of his unique and exemplary life.
When Jesus was born, he developed a very special love for the things of God even more than his parents, and this was demonstrated during the annual Passover festival of the Jews. Joseph and Mary, like other Israelites took Jesus to the temple at Jerusalem to celebrate and worship God. They listened for days to the priests about the laws of God and his plan for his people. After the Passover, Jesus’ parents began their journey back to their homes and had spent about three days on transit before they discovered Jesus was missing (traveling between cities in those days took days).
Imagine! Now they had to make a U-turn back to Jerusalem. They were worried and began searching the entire city for Jesus, but they didn’t have to comb for long until they found him in the temple. But what was the young 12-year old Jesus doing in the temple?
When they entered the temple, they were surprised to see a crowd had gathered around the wonder child – Jesus. There he was, asking intelligent and insightful questions about the ways of God from the temple leaders.
People around learned from Jesus’ questions and were astonished as to how such a young boy could know so much about God.
His parents, even though, proud of their son accosted him for having made them worry. What he said was more astonishing. “Don’t you know I would go about my father’s business,” Baby – Jesus said.
He was letting them know that his life would soon take a turn that they might not enjoy. He would dedicate his entire life for the things of God. He had a prophecy to fulfill.
The bible recorded that his father was marveled at those words, and his mother took it to heart. They knew it was a fulfillment of an angel’s prophesy, and what the scriptures have said about the Messiah. So what else did Jesus do, and how did he fulfill the many prophecies about him? Join us in the next post as we reveal it.
